👀 ️Is Instagram copying BeReal?

Instagram seems to be taking inspiration from the (relatively) new app BeReal.

Is IG out of ideas? Maybe - But this isn’t the first time that Instagram implemented a new feature that was highly inspired by another social app. Remember where stories came from? (Hint: Snapchat did it first)

But now, they seem to be going after BeReal with their newly released Dual Camera mode, which in a nutshell, lets you capture a picture with your front-facing & back-facing camera, simultaneously.

For those who might say, BeWhat? Here’s an article that covers the app in detail.

Here is a side to side of both interfaces (left BeReal, right Instagram).

While Instagram’s new “Dual Camera” feature is not exactly the same as BeReal as a whole, who is to say that they won’t start testing out releases that get increasingly similar to this “anti-instagram” app.

🎮 Spoonflower: Gamification that doesn’t look like spam

Today’s e-commerce masterclass is taken from Spoon Flower, an online decor and fabric marketplace with revenues well into the 8-figures.

Brand-friendly spin-to-win?

Most e-commerce marketers understand that people like (1) games and (2) good deals.

The classic example is the spin-to-win widget that you can find on many e-commerce websites.

However, This kind of user experience dilutes the brand in many ways.

The question: Is there a way to do a gamified pre-purchase capture flow that doesn’t feel like wish.com?

That’s where Spoonflower pick-a-swatch-to-win comes in:

Step 1: Pick a Swatch to Reveal Your Exclusive Coupon Code

I assume they wrote this tagline as they saw users coming in and out of the website to get a better discount code.

Step 2: Yay! You picked our biggest discount! Reveal it by entering your email below.

Step 2.1: Want to unlock a coupon code?

If I decide to exit the email capture screen, a clean widget appears on the bottom left of your screen to get you back into the flow.

I recommend you go and test this flow from a-to-z as it is a good one.

Takeaways:

  • Make your product native to your gamified experience (Spoonflower used Swatches, which is a small sample of fabric).

  • Recapture people that exit your flow along the way with a subtle widget.

  • Keep your experience on brand.
